A super-sized ref has been released. Breitling presents the Classic AVI Chronograph 42, the 765 AVI "Co-Pilot" luxury cheap watches from 1953, a scaled-down version that pays homage to the vintage original.
Unlike its big brother, the 46mm Super AVI GMT, which has a second time zone function, the Classic AVI is a no-frills watch with just the time and a chronograph. The Classic AVI debuts with a series of regular production models, each inspired by historic fighter jets, as well as limited edition AVI references. 765 Reprinted in 1964.
The Super AVI GMT is a vintage-inspired chronograph with an attractive design, but has the drawback of a 46mm case – huge even by modern standards. The introduction of a more compact version is welcome, even if this addition further expands Breitling's extensive (and sometimes confusing) catalogue.
With a smaller case, the Classic AVI cheap replica watches arguably has better proportions than its larger sibling, sized for a more vintage-inspired look. Adding to its appeal, the Classic AVI is one of the most affordable Breitling chronographs, thanks to the Valjoux movement (also known as the Breitling Caliber 23).
The P-51 Mustang is the top of the line of classic AVIs. It has a classic pilot chronograph aesthetic, with a black dial and imitation patina Arabic numerals for a nostalgic feel.
But enthusiasts will undoubtedly love the AVI ref. 765 1964 Best reprint. Measuring slightly smaller in diameter at 41mm, it is a faithful replica of the vintage original in terms of design, but enhanced with modern materials such as the ADLC-coated bezel and the in-house Caliber B09. That makes it more expensive with some margins, but for the sport it's arguably worth it.

All models in the Classic AVI series share the same design, but with different color schemes. Each model is inspired by historic fighter jets: P-51 Mustang (black), Vought F4U Corsair (blue), Curtiss P-40 Warhawk (khaki), and Mosquito (black with ceramic bezel). Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and Mosquito models feature "reverse panda" livery for added contrast.
With the exception of the P-51 Mustang variant, which is available in stainless steel or 18k red gold, the other models are only available in stainless steel. Inside the Classic AVI is the Breitling Caliber 23, a COSC-certified Valjoux 7753.
In contrast, the Super AVI GMT is powered by the internal Caliber B04, which explains its larger size and higher price.
Alongside the new Classic AVI, Breitling also unveiled a historic re-issue of the ref. 765 1964 Re-Edition, powered by the in-house Caliber B09.
The 765 1964 Re-Edition clearly caters to the needs of audiophiles. It faithfully reproduces the detail of the vintage original with baton markers and pencil pointers.
